Ten miles of the D&H are improved with a crushed stone surface, from just south of Forest City to Herrick Center at SR 374. The major trail head is located in Forest City on the Industrial Park Road, just off SR 247. You can also access the trail in Union Dale, next to Cables Store.
Plans are to continue improvements northward to Ararat. A Transportation Enhancement grant has been received along with matching funds from the PA Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).
The Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority (LHVA) has plans to connect the southern end of the D&H to the trail in Carbondale.
Funds are continually being sought for trail improvements and resurfacing for the D&H to the NY State border.
The D&H and O&W trail system has the potential to be one of the top rail-trails in the nation due to its historic and scenic qualities, its potential linkages to trails north (NY Susquehanna River Trail), south (Lackawanna Heritage Trail) and east (Gravity Trails) and its unique loops utilizing two railbeds.
